Calendar: Learn about backyard birds

DECATUR, Ill. — The program Backyard Birds — From Hummingbirds to Hawks will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Macon County Extension office, 3351 N. President Howard Brown Blvd., Decatur.

A variety of topics will be covered, from the habits and habitats of hummingbirds to what birds are saying to each other with their songs. Common native birds plus those pesky, non-native invasive species will be discussed. The connection between native plants and native wildlife also will be addressed.

4-H Fall Fest

AMBOY, Ill. — The Lee County 4-H Fall Fest will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Lee County 4-H Center, 1196 Franklin Road, Amboy.

There will be a costume contest, pumpkin hunt and carnival games. Popcorn, hot chocolate, and treats will be served. The event is free and open to the public of all ages.

Fall Festival

NORTH VERNON, Ind. — The Jennings County Extension Fall Festival and Annual Update will be from 4 to 7 p.m. ET Oct. 29 at the Jennings County Fairgrounds Community Building, 4920 N. State Highway 3, North Vernon.

Dress up as your favorite book character and join the Story Walk to learn all about Purdue Extension along the way; learn fun facts about pumpkins and sample a nutritional pumpkin soup; and participate in STEM activities.

A chili dinner will be served by the Jennings County 4-H junior leaders.

Admission is a non-perishable food item or free-will donation for the JCHS Food Pantry. Suggested items for the food pantry include oatmeal, pancake mix and syrup, Pop-Tarts, cereal, granola bars, crackers, salt and pepper, cooking oils, canned vegetables, and canned soup.

Boo at the Slough

CYPRESS, Ill. — Boo at the Slough will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Henry N. Barkhausen Cache River Wetlands Center, 8885 IL-37, Cypress.

Families are invited to hike through the Egret Slough Trail behind the Wetlands Center on a guided trick-or-treating adventure to meet misunderstood creatures of the swamp. Learn about creatures like spiders, bats, and owls. There will be games and crafts, and more. Everyone is invited to wear their Halloween costume.

This a free event and open to the public and offered by Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Friends of the Cache, and University of Illinois Extension.

Winter Sowing

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — A winer sowing workshop will be at 10 a.m. Oct. 31 at the Kankakee County Extension office, 1650 Commerce Drive, Bourbonnais.

Winter sowing is a fun and easy way to start seeds outside during the winter. You plant your seeds in miniature greenhouses made from recycled plastic containers, and then put them outside in the snow and freezing cold. Once the weather starts to warm up in the spring, the seeds will germinate at their own pace, just as in nature.

Sewing Day

FLORA, Ind. — Carroll County Extension Homemakers’ annual Sewing Day will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET Oct. 31 at the 4-H Building, 800 E. Main St., Flora.

Non-sewers are also welcome to help cut, iron and thread ribbon. A soup lunch will be provided.

Sweet Street

NORTH VERNON, Ind. — North Vernon Sweet Street is an opportunity for kids to trick-or-treat from 5 to 8 p.m. ET Oct. 31 in downtown North Vernon. Jennings County 4-H Council will have a table set up at the event to pass out candy as well as information for the 2022-2023 4-H enrollment year.

Pesticide Training

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Multi-category commercial pesticide applicator training will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET Nov. 1 at the Walb Student Union Classic Ballroom, Purdue Fort Wayne Campus, Union Circle Drive, Fort Wayne.

This event is approved for continuing credit hours in several categories, including:

All About Owls

FRANKLIN GROVE, Ill. — The program All About Owls will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Winfred Knox Memorial Library, 112 S. Elm St., Franklin Grove.

Succulent Workshop

HILLSBORO, Ill. — The Succulent Workshop will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Montgomery County Extension office, 1 Industrial Park Drive, Hillsboro.

Extension Horticulture Educator Andrew Holsinger will explain how to grow succulents and create your own potted design. Learn the basics on soil, water, culture, and propagation methods for succulents. The program also will be available online.

Woodland Conference

MADISON, Ind. — The Woodland Owner Conference will begin at 10 a.m. ET Nov. 4, and 7:30 a.m. Nov. 5 at Clifty Inn, Clifty Falls State Park, 1501 Green Road, Madison.

This annual conference includes an optional Friday morning and afternoon field tour of two local landowners’ woods. Saturday will be an indoor program with speakers and breakout sessions on a number of topics important to woodland owners and an optional evening awards banquet. Attendees can choose to attend single days or all-weekend registration.

Indiana Forestry & Woodland Owners Association was founded in 1977 and is a non-profit organization dedicated to conservation and sustainable management of woodlands in Indiana. Achievement Night
