Calendar: Hardwood University

AKRON, Ind. — Learn the theory and practice of sawing hardwood logs into lumber at Hardwood University from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. ET Nov. 16 at Pike Lumber Company, 719 Front St., Akron.

• Observe external characteristics affecting lumber quality and measurement of selected logs.

• Discuss decisions made at head saw, resaw, edger and trimmer that affect the lumber grade.

• Cut logs on a portable sawmill to observe the process in practice and evaluate the impact of right/wrong decisions.

• Tour a commercial sawmill.

ANR Retreat

The annual Agriculture Natural Resources Retreat will be noon to 5:45 p.m. ET Nov. 15, and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Beck Agricultural Center, 4550 US-52, West Lafayette.

This event is an opportunity for Purdue Extension specailists, Purdue Extension educators, Purdue staff and ANR partners to get connected and receive training.

ANR Extension educators serve as research-based, unbiased information source for county and state constituents on a variety of topics, including crops, ag business, livestock, natural resource, horticulture, small farms, urban ag, pesticide use, and land conservation. Burnout Syndrome

URBANA, Ill. — Learn about Burnout Syndrome in Healthcare Professionals from noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 16.

Burnout has negative consequences for individuals, organizations, and society overall. Beyond its impact on the physical and mental health of workers, burnout strains organizations and increases turnover, tardiness, absenteeism, and difficulty in retaining staff. Nurses are particularly at risk of experiencing burnout. Already considered a public health concern, nurse burnout was further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this online session, learn to identify burnout, understand common risk factors, and follow the latest evidence of how to address burnout in ourselves and others.

Soup Skills

CORYDON, Ind. — Children in grades K-2 are invited to hear a story about sharing and cooperation and learn cooking skills at the 4-H Mini Stone Soup Workshop, 5:30 p.m. ET Nov. 16 at the Harrison County Extension office, 247 Atwood St., Corydon.

Each child will bring an ingredient and an adult helper and collaborate to prep and cook, collectively contributing to the pot of soup that they will eat and share. Each child will receive a gift to take home, along with a recipe and a gratitude card.

Fisheries Workshop

WHITING, Ind. — The Lake Michigan Fisheries Workshop will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. CT Nov. 16 at the Whiting Public Library, 1735 Oliver St., Whiting.

The workshop will provide information on fish biology, ecology and other fisheries topics in Lake Michigan, including lake trout and Asian carp.

Holiday Craft Bazaar

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Vigo County 4-H Council Holiday Craft Bazaar will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET Nov. 19 at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds, 3901 S US Highway 41, Terre Haute.

Featured will be handmade crafts, jewelry, embroidery, clothing, kitchenware, woodworking, artwork, and fall and Christmas decor. Admission is $1. Proceeds go towards the 4-H Scholarship Fund.
