Latest Beck’s research published

ATLANTA, Ind. — The Beck’s 2024 Practical Farm Research Book is hot off the press and includes a long list of research results.

Farmers can sift through findings from a variety of locations where products, management systems, equipment and concepts have been put to the test to measure yield and profitability.

If a product or practice is labeled PFR Proven, it has been tested for a minimum of three years at multiple locations. It also must provide a positive yield gain each year, and it must average a positive return on investment over the three-year period.

New This Year

• Studies on sprayer applications, sidedress depth and sealer, and fungicide systems.

• Information about a new PFR Proven product: XYWAY LFR.

• Data from new locations: Salina, Kansas, and Olivia, Minnesota.

• Information about a new crop: milo.

Strategies For Success

1. Planting date — Early planting pays. However, the penalty for delayed planting with corn may not be as severe as it is for soybeans. Achieving a uniform stand is more important than the calendar date.

2. Closing wheels — In most soils and most situations, any pair of spiked closing wheels is better than the standard two solid rubber closing wheels.

3. Starter on both sides — Placing nitrogen on both sides of the row has proven to increase yield by improving root growth on both sides of the plant.

4. Split applying nitrogen — By splitting your nitrogen applications, you reduce the risk of loss from early-season rainfall.

5. The most profitable fungicide application timing is the R1 growth stage.
