From the Fields: Off and running

With the rains last weekend, the progress on soybean harvest this week was much slower. We switched the combine back to corn and knocked out a custom high-moisture corn job for my relatives that farm next to us. We received over an inch of rain this week late Wednesday night and into Thursday. A few were running with combines later on Saturday. Most were in corn, but I did see one and heard of a couple in beans, but the beans had really picked up moisture and were going to have to be put in the bin with air on them before delivery to the elevators. Even with a little rain around sunrise Sunday a few were able to run later that day, as well.

We have prepped ground to have our wheat and rye in this coming week. We will have more cover crop rye to get in when the rest of our soybeans are off, but these acres will be the wheat and rye we will save for harvest next summer. It will be our second year growing our own cover crop rye seed. We cut the rye acres this time around because we still have over 600 bushels of rye seed for cover crops left to sell this fall.

I would like to congratulate the Erbsen Family from Lanark on breeding the Supreme Champion cow at World Dairy Expo last week in Madison, Wisconsin. It’s great seeing a wonderful local family receive the highest honor on a worldwide stage recognizing their hard work to breed for the best genetics.
